Mohamed Abdelmonem joins Les Aiglons

OGC Nice is proud to announce that centre-back Mohamed Abdelmonem has joined the club from Al Ahly SC, signing a contract that runs until 2028.

In Egypt, Abdelmonem is a star and a pillar of one of Africa’s greatest national teams, having reached the final of the Africa Cup of Nations with his country in 2022. He also held this status at Al Ahly, a club with which he built up a pretty decent honours list. As a three-time Egyptian Premier League winner (2017–18, 2022–23 and 2023–24) and a two-time CAF Champions League winner (2022–23 and 2023–24), the centre-back, who has earned 25 caps and scored two goals for The Pharaohs, will be “eternally grateful to Al Ahly”, a club with which he “grew as a player and as a man”. “It was time for me to take up a new challenge at a big European club, and I’ve chosen to join OGC Nice in order to take that next step in my career. I’d like to thank the club for believing in me, and I’d like to thank Al Ahly for making this transfer possible. I’m going to give my all to make the fans proud and to help OGC Nice to achieve its aims,” Abdelmonem added.

“Collectively, we’re convinced that Mohamed will give us a lot,” explained Florian Maurice, Les Aiglons’ sporting director. “We were in continuous contact with each other throughout the summer. He played his last league game on 29th July, and after he won the title with his club, we sped things up so that he could join us. He’s a central defender with a lot of experience, including at international level, as well as good heading, tough pressing and great passing. He’s also used to pressure, which is a good thing.”

Having come through the ranks at Al Ahly, Abdelmonem was loaned out to Smouha SC and to Future FC before establishing himself at the Cairo-based outfit, with which he racked up 115 appearances and eight goals. “Following on from Tanguy [Ndombele], Jonathan [Clauss] and Moïse [Bombito], we’ve again managed to sign an international, which proves that our project is a clear and ambitious one,” concluded OGC Nice president Jean-Pierre Rivère. “Transfer windows are never easy, but we’re continuing to work calmly by moving forward step by step. I’d like to welcome Mohamed, with whom we’ve had an excellent relationship since day one. He’s the first Egyptian player in the club’s history, and I hope that he’ll leave a wonderful mark here. Welcome, Mohamed!”
