Match report
Le Gym heroic in Paris (2-3)
After a thrilling match, Le Gym won 3-2 against PSG at the Parc des Princes, where they had not won since 2009. Still unbeaten this season, Les Aiglons were able to count on a superb performance from Terem Moffi, who scored twice.
It's here, the first act of what we hope will be a great adventure! With a 3-2 win over defending champions Paris in their own stadium, Dante and Co claimed their first major victory in Ligue 1 2023/2024. Impressive defensively, courageous in build-up play and dangerous in transition, the Aiglons won at the Parc des Princes for the first time in almost 14 years, with the last success in Paris dating back to 7 November 2009 (1-0).
LE GYM STAY TRUE TO PRINCIPLES
Francesco Farioli had said that his men would not go back on their principles when it came to taking on the Parisian giants. That promise was kept, despite a frustrating first five minutes. From Nice's first throw-in, Terem Moffi and Morgan Sanson pressed Donnarumma aggressively to recover the ball high up the pitch, but failed to capitalise on the Italian keeper's clumsiness (5'). The Aiglons started as they meant to go on as they spent the evening disrupting PSG's build-up play with their individual marking and collective pressing. Moffi's opening goal was the result of JC Todibo winning the ball high up the pitch, coming out to harass Mbappé, who had strayed into his 25-yard box. The new French international saw his shot blocked by his strike partner, who managed to find Donnarumma's net after a scramble (0-1, 20').
PARIS HIT BACK
But Paris, who had already won convincingly against Lens (3-1) and Lyon (1-4), hit back. First Dembélé was thwarted by Melvin Bard as he closed in on Bulka (27'). Then Mbappé cleverly stayed on the edge of the area to meet Hakimi's pull-back with a subtle curl past the outstretched hand of the Polish keeper (1-1, 29').
Despite some periods of heavy pressure from Paris, Le Gym continued to play their game and could even have gone into the break with the lead, had Donnarumma not saved Thuram's curled effort (25') and Lotomba had managed to get his shot on target from close range (45'+2).
TEREM MOFFI: KING OF THE TRANSITION
More compact after the break, Les Aiglons hurt their hosts in transition in the second half. In this department, Terem Moffi is king. Sent in behind by Sanson, the Super Eagle beat Danilo Pereira before crossing to Laborde, who was on hand to push the ball into the Parisian net (1-2, 54'). Ten minutes later, it was the same story again, with the two strikers playing a nice one-two, before Moffi slotted past Donnarumma from outside the area (1-3, 68').
Defensively solid, with Youssouf Ndayishimiye at his very best, Les Azuréens resisted after the introductions of Kolo Muani, Barcola and Ugarte. Only Mbappé was able to breach the Nice defence on Friday evening, as the French international acrobatically slotted home to reduce the deficit (2-3, 86').
With a lot of heart and courage, and without deviating from their forward-thinking style, Le Gym secured their first big win of the season and are now provisionally in second place in the league, one point behind... Monaco, their next opponents (9pm next Friday at the Stade Louis-II).
