Lucien Favre: "We didn't tremble"
In the post-match press conference Lucien Favre, the coach of the Aiglons, looked back on the deserved success of his team, which "didn't give up a lot of chances" despite PSG's pressure.
What was it like in the dressing room after this win?
It was a celebration but like after every win. It's a little special because it was against PSG but it remained controlled. It was a nice match, with a lot of commitment and intensity. We scored at a good time - a super goal with a great idea and finish from Mario Balotelli with his left foot. That gave us even more confidence. We had a good first half. PSG were very good too. It was borderline for us - you have to be fair.
How did you approach the second half?
In the dressing room we said to ourselves that we would have to score again because one goal would not be enough. That's what we did very quickly, with a superb goal from Ricardo on his left foot. We relaxed a little bit after that - maybe a little bit too much. We limited ourselves to being a little bit too defensive. PSG tried to unsettle us in every way possible. They succeeded every now and then but we defended well tactically. We didn't leave too much space through the centre. We were in danger when we lost possession. When they were able to play with Di Maria and Draxler it was dangerous. We knew that they were going to play with their wingers on the sides - they did so but we didn't let them have too many chances on that level. The third goal also came at a good time. It was like a deliverance but we didn't really tremble during the match. The goal we let in came from a corner that we shouldn't have conceded.
Do you think it is still possible to finish second?
We're going to continue with the same philosophy that we have had since the start. I would even say that we will take it training session after training session (smiles). We're going to Marseille for a big match against a team that had great success in Caen (a 5-1 win). They're a team with great potential who made big investments this winter and will continue to do so this summer. We'll think of Marseille first. After that we face Angers, who are in the final of the Coupe de France, and we will go to Lyon to finish.
Did the good atmosphere this evening help your players?
It's always enjoyable when the stadium is full. Of course it's an advantage. The atmosphere was magnificent but I have to say that even when there are (only) 23,000 there it's good too.
Do you think that Monaco are assured of the title?
You never know. They shouldn't ease off. There will be suspense until the end when it comes to the top three, although Monaco of course have an advantage.
Does the win this evening give you regrets over the two points you left behind in Toulouse?
We were playing against a team who have a budget of €560 million while ours is €42 million…. So to have regrets over the season… But yes we should have won in Toulouse. It should have been 2 or 3-0 at half-time but that's the way it is. We took a point there when they beat Monaco at Paris at home.
Is your team still surprising you?
Not really. We're working very well all week. We do 99 per cent of our work with the ball. They are exercises designed to prepare for the following match and to improve players individually. We're advancing step by step. What pleases me is that we've held on well. It was hard at a certain point but we didn't lose our cool. PSG had a lot of situations but few clear chances.
You made your changes earlier than usual - what was the reason for that?
Against PSG if you slack off on your pressing, it becomes impossible. So there was more tiredness than usual and we had to take off players who were dropping off. We alternated between a deep defence and high pressing. If a player is no longer coordinated then it doesn't work.
PSG helped you a little bit at the end by going out of the match at a time when you weren't as good…
We were not less effective. It's just that we had to withdraw because PSG were trying everything to come back. We were playing deep but that's not something that you can do for a whole match. What was important was to stay in the game. Take the necessary risks and press when it was necessary to do so.
