Haise: ‘Everything had to come together’

Find out what Franck Haise had to say at the post-match press conference following OGC Nice's stunning 3-1 victory over PSG at the Parc des Princes.

Can we call tonight's result a huge achievement for OGC Nice?
Yes. When you beat PSG like that, at their home ground, this season, it's obviously a great achievement.

What was the game plan to beat PSG?
Paris had more chances, more shots, more control, like every weekend. For us, everything had to fall into place to pull off an upset. We had to be clinical in attack, which hasn't really been the case in recent weeks, and we had to defend as well as possible while still making a few changes to our usual play. And then, from time to time, we had to try and come out of our low defensive block to try and get a little control. It took a while, but we managed it from time to time. And then we also needed a goalkeeper who made some exceptional saves. When everything comes together on a night like this, you can pull it off. For us, it's a great achievement to beat this Paris team.

Were you surprised to see Paris field their strongest team tonight?
It makes a lot of sense to field a strong team to prepare for a Champions League semi-final, but I admit I hadn't prepared for it that way.

When you spoke to the players, did you all feel that PSG didn’t give 100% in the duels? Was that one of the keys to your success tonight?
I think they put a lot into it. Did they give 100%? I don't have the answer. But we gave 100% and even a little more. What was important for us was what we were putting in. We couldn't afford to be at 90%, everything had to be there, starting with the individual performances. In terms of what we can do, even though there were moments where we were a bit lucky, I think we weren't far off 100%.

Can you give us the recipe for getting a result against PSG?
OGC Nice have come here and won in recent seasons when I wasn't the coach. I don't have a recipe, obviously. The quality of the players we have, the tactical adjustments we can make... There wanted to tighten up the middle of the park and try, from time to time, to get a few extra players on the ball because Paris defend so well... It's not a recipe that wins every time, but it's what we tried to do and the players did it very well.

The second goal right after the restart was important in the flow of the game. It was scored with a very direct attack, right from the restart. Was that one of the instructions given at half-time?
We knew that time could work in our favour, but it's true that it came after only 15 seconds. We struggled to find our direct game in the first half, it was very difficult. We knew they were going to start strongly, which is what happened. The aim, when there were good runs and the first pass allowed us to eliminate a player, was to play direct if possible. But it was also sometimes about having a bit of control to breathe a little. The idea was to be able to do both. In any case, that move was excellent. The presence in the box, and in particular Laborde's run, which opened things up a little was perfect, and just what was needed.

Bułka said in the mixed zone that it was the biggest game of his career. Was his performance the cornerstone, the extra ingredient that made this achievement possible?
Somewhere between the extra ingredient and the cornerstone. I'll try to find a happy medium. To win here, the goalkeeper has to be more than just an extra. But he wasn't the only cornerstone. Many players were cornerstones in this game.

We saw Youssouf Ndayishimiye in central defence, even though he's a midfielder. Was that a strategy?
He's been playing in central defence for almost a year since I've been here. It's a strategy I've adopted since the start of the season. Even in the national team, he regularly plays at the back. He has the ability, especially in a three-man defence, to be a player who can bring the ball out, who has the leadership to command and who, when necessary, can give us extra numbers in midfield.

The team has been criticised in recent games for its lack of finishing. Tonight, you had three shots on target and scored three goals. Is that what you're hoping to see for the rest of the season?
If we had been as clinical as we were tonight in the last few weeks, we would have a few more points. Having said that, you have to make choices and trust the players. We're not at the stage where we can have a complete, successful season one after the other. We just have to accept that, keep working and wait for luck to come our way again, as it did tonight.

Any news on Mohamed Abdelmonem?
We're waiting for the MRI results on Mohamed. It doesn't look too good for his knee.

Did Morgan Sanson's performance exceed your expectations, even beyond his scoring two goals?
Concerning Morgan, if I started him for the first time, it's because he's been getting better and better over the last three or four weeks. I was convinced that we needed to strengthen the middle of the park with a third midfielder, sometimes even a fourth. I thought it was the right time. He's tactically intelligent, he covers a lot of ground and technically he knows how to play true. A match with such intensity was always a risk. He lost a few balls, like other players did at the start of the match. But then he grew into the game, as illustrated by his two beautiful goals. It was a first start that exceeded expectations.

Another decision you made was to keep Badredine Bouanani in the starting line-up and leave Evann Guessand out. How will you manage this rotation between now and the end of the season?
The same way I've been managing it for 31 games. I make my choices, sometimes I get it wrong, sometimes I get it right, like all coaches. We'll continue like this until the end.

You've had some great performances this season. Is this one the best?
Let's just say that with four games to go, I don't know if anyone would have bet on us winning here. I don't think so, not even the most fervent supporters and astute journalists. I had a strong belief, which I reiterated to the players yesterday, and again today, and even again at half-time. Of course, we needed a little luck and clinical finishing. It's a great victory that proves this team can do great things, even when they don't have much possession and are forced to defend a lot. We have to keep that in mind. The hardest part is to repeat that performance more often, but it still very significant.

Does this win come at the right time for you?
It's good that it came tonight. But I think something happened when we equalised in Strasbourg two weeks ago in the 94th minute (2-2). We need to keep that spirit going until the last minute of the last game.

You are provisionally in the top four of Ligue 1, in the Champions League qualifying places. Could this victory change Nice's ambitions for the end of the season?
My ambitions for the end of the season were, of course, to get back to winning ways, but above all to have a team, a squad that wants to achieve things together, regardless of who plays or doesn't play. When I see how they prepared for this game, this is the attitude that shows we can have ambition.

Could tonight's victory also convince certain players of what they are capable of and show them that they can achieve much more in the rest of this season and into next season?
It has to serve that purpose, for sure. When you win 3-1 here, it has to show that you're capable of doing it. Tonight's performance should make them realise that there are no limits. They mustn't set themselves any limits.

Could Morgan Sanson's freshness be an asset for the end of the season?
In any case, when you see the game he played in his first start, even if his legs were obviously very heavy when he came off... Everything he's built up over the last eight months, that he hasn't been able to give until now, it's great that he can give it to us for these last few games of the season.
