Galtier: ‘A fantastic performance’

Speaking after Le Gym’s qualification for the Coupe de France quarter-finals courtesy of their victory over PSG at the Parc des Princes (0-0, 6-5 on pens.), Christophe Galtier had this to say:

Coach, it's an upset tonight. What was the mood like in the dressing room? Was it euphoria after this win? Or is the team already focused on going all the way?
Both. And before talking about going all the way, we'll have to beat Marseille in the next round. It's a very good performance, we were able to seize the opportunity to play a much-weakened PSG, for various reasons: injured players and others on national team duty. There was an opportunity and the players took it well, with a disciplined match and a lot of effort. Through their technical quality, Paris is a team that requires a lot of effort, running and defensive discipline to avoid being opened up. In that sense, it was good. We were much better in using the ball, compared to what we did against them in the league (0-0 on 1 December 2021). But not enough over the course of the whole match to be more dangerous. We had opportunities to create a great chances. We didn't take them; sometimes because we were too hasty in our decision making, and then in the second half, because we were tired or getting nervous. I thought I could feel my players starting to get nervous, frustrated, starting to question the referee and to talk back. You have to be very concentrated against Paris. In the second half, and even more so with the arrival of Kylian (Mbappé) who always puts a lot of pressure on us and Mauricio (Pochettino) who has changed the way he plays, we played in a very low block. But I think we defended well. We had some good passages of play, some good construction, but, higher up, we did not finish off our attacks.
After this qualification, is the objective to win the Coupe de France?
We are obviously happy to eliminate Paris. We know their success in the Coupe de France. But before thinking about winning this trophy, which I think is the most beautiful to win, we will play Marseille [in the quarter-finals, on 8, 9 or 10 February at Allianz Riviera]. We knew about the draw before it started tonight. We will have a very intense match against OM, who also have a great history with this cup. There will be a great atmosphere, people will come back to the stadium and there will be a lot of enthusiasm. But before that, we have a league match at home to Clermont [Sunday at 3pm] and we will have to continue to win and to want to win, to improve and to be consistent in our performances. We mustn't think about anything other than a league match and a quarter-final to be played.
How did you find Bulka's performance and did you hesitate to start him in this match?
I thought he was calm and collected. He was quite confident in the air, but also on the ball. In particular, a shot in the second half where he caught the ball very well. Then there was the penalty shoot-out. As much as it wasn't especially prepared for the shooters - even though, without imposing anything on them, I saw them taking penalties during the week - but for Marcin obviously there's preparation. It is also a credit to Nicolas Dehon, a former PSG goalkeeping coach , who is his trainer and who has had a lot of data and analysis on the shooters for a very long time. He prepared this with a lot of professionalism and was able to pass on information to Marcin. Of course he is decisive. The choice to start him was linked to the fact that I needed to see him in a match against a more quality opponent than Cholet in the round of 32 (0-1). I told both goalkeepers that I was not giving the competition to one of them. The reason why I made this decision is that Marcin had Covid a short time ago and Walter Benitez did not. You can be faced with that, to have Walter out for one or two games and I wanted Marcin to have some points of reference if he was to play in the league.
A word about Dante's panenka in the penalty shoot-out?
In Metz, I said that the pitch was very difficult for this technical skill. To do it, you need a good pitch. Amine (Gouiri) did it and Dante, our captain, did it today. That's good. You make sure you give advice and encouragement before a penalty shoot-out and then there is what the player feels and that is up to them. I haven't seen Dante take a single penalty in training. Not even this week. I don't think he was even in the top five. I don't impose an order, I certainly don't forbid a player who wants to take on from doing so and I don't push a player who doesn't want to. It's such a special exercise and it seems simple technically. But on the other side, you have Donnarumma, who is nearly two metres tall... They went for it... Andy (Delort), who scores all the time, had his saved, but I told him that the next one he gets, he has to come and shoot it because it's an exercise he usually performs well in.
Xavi Simons missed the decisive penalty kick for Paris. How would you have reacted if one of your young players had found himself in that situation?
You have to take away the guilt or the weight of being eliminated. There weren't many options. It's obviously a great performance by my squad, but we eliminated a PSG team that was very weak in terms of numbers, even if the starting eleven is a quality one. He's a young boy who went with nerve and a desire to get his shot on target. He missed it and I'm sure that his teammates, who have talent and experience, will help him to get over it, which is obviously unpleasant for an 18-year-old. I already suspect that Mauricio (Pochettino) and his staff must have taken the weight of an elimination off him. Obviously it's a decisive penalty, but you can't blame the elimination on this 18-year-old boy who, apart from that, I think is very good.
