Match report
Le Gym beaten in Brest (1-0)
OGC Nice fell to defeat (1-0) at Brest on Sunday on Matchday 31 of L1.
Two and a half days after the first leg of the Europa Conference League quarter-final against Basel (2-2), Le Gym didn't manage to kick start their league campaign at the Stade Francis – Le Blé. This was denied by a goal conceded in the 12th minute of the match, when Lala's cross was headed home by Le Douaron, the Pirates top scorer this season (8 goals); a lack of ruthlessness in front of goal when they did create chances; and then a lack of energy in the final stages of the encounter.
Between the two European matches, Didier Digard had to deal without Ramsey and Ndayishimiye (rested as a precaution). The two midfielders were added to the list of unavailable players (Pepe, Diop, Lotomba, Viti, Beka Beka and Atal), which led the coach to field a youthful starting 11, handing Reda Belahyane his first start for the first team. At 18 years old, the academy product put in a strong 90 minutes, showing accuracy and personality in front of the defence.
Les Niçois started in a 3-5-2, to try "to protect the youngsters", as explained by the coach, but switched to a 4-3-3 after half an hour. Amraoui moved from the left side of the defence to the wing, before making way for Moffi for the second half, which saw Brahimi move from the central striker role to his preferred role on the wing.
In the first half, Les Aiglons created several good moves. Four of them led to serious chances. Bouanani struck twice with his right foot (18', 24') but was denied on each occasion by Bizot. Just like Barkley from 25 metres (44') and Bard after a run down the wing following a smart one-two with Brahimi (45+1').
In the second half, Nice's legs became heavier, despite the combined entries of Laborde, Todibo and Boudaoui. The only opportunity fell to Laborde, who took advantage Moffi's enthusiasm. Gaëtan, like his teammates, could not beat Bizot, who was able to divert his right-footed shot into the box (65').
At home, SB29, with its direct style and its two attacking towers (Le Douaron and Mounié) progressively took control of the match. They were unable to double their lead, but the early goal was enough to secure the victory.
Les Aiglons will now switch their focus to the second leg of the quarter-final of the Europa Conference League, which will take place on Thursday at the Allianz Riviera against Basel (9pm).
