Vieira: “We went and got the win”

Patrick Vieira spoke to the media after Les Aiglons’ victory over Nantes (2-1) on Saturday.

Coach, what did you make of the match this evening?

First of all, it’s really satisfying to have won the match, because against Bordeaux we put in a good performance without taking the three points. Today, it was a little more complicated but we went out and got the win. Matches with 11 against 10 are always complicated, Nantes were well set up in their own half. It was a bit difficult to find spaces and create chances. On the whole, I am happy with the team’s performance. I am aware that not everything was perfect, but it was tough against a very well organised side. We took risks to go out and secure the victory, we were caught on the counter, but it’s a consequence that you have to accept. We kept our organisation, we had a lot of crosses and quite dangerous chances.

You quickly changed your system, pushing Myziane out to the left. What was the reason behind that?

The red card modified the tactical aspect of the game. I wanted more players between the lines to stretch the Nantes midfield. What we were lacking was a bit of rhythm to our passes. There were situations where we played a two on one badly.

Myziane had a difficult evening…

(He interrupts) I loved Myziane. You are only seeing the bad things that he did, but in terms of his commitment, his desire, it was very good. You are forgetting that he is coming back from injury and hasn’t played for a long time. He is lacking in confidence. Give him a bit more time. When I took him off, I was frustrated. Because I see him work on a daily basis, I see the desire that he has. For him, it was difficult this evening, but he is a serious lad, who works hard. I was very disappointed with the whistling.

Kasper Dolberg didn’t get that bit of luck in front of goal.

Kasper lacked a bit of luck in the chances he created. He lacked a bit of liveliness. He maybe shouldn’t have played this match because he had a bad cold, but we decided to play him anyway.

Khephren Thuram seems to have taken a step up…

He wasn’t meant to play either, but Morgan (Schneiderlin) had a little problem with his adductors during the warm-up and we didn’t want to take the risk. Khephren played his role, he brought rhythm to our game in the first half, although he dropped off later on. I thought he was committed and made good choices. It’s not perfect yet, but he is progressing and gaining in confidence. We need to give him the time to grow, and in growing he will make mistakes…

You have lots of injuries, are you worried by the depth of your bench?

Flavius (Daniliuc) and Dan (Ndoye) did well when they came on, little Alexis (Trouillet) did too, with his first outing in Ligue 1. They are players that need time and confidence. We are behind them to help them to progress. It’s a nice challenge for them, they will have the chance to play in the Europa League matches, even though they won’t all be ready.

Your players wore a black armband following the damage caused by Storm Alex yesterday…

We wanted to lift the spirits of all these people. To all those who have been through terrible times in the last 24 hours, we dedicate this victory to everybody who is struggling.
