Saint-Brieuc 2-1 Nice

Franck Haise’s press conference

Here is what Franck Haise had to say in the post-match press conference following Les Aiglons’ 2-1 Coupe de France elimination at the hands of Stade Briochin.

Coach, it must be an immense disappointment tonight (Wednesday)...
There are no other words for it. For 80 minutes, we produced the performance we needed to against a good team on a difficult pitch, even if we should have scored that second goal. In the first half, we came up short against their defence. After a little tactical readjustment, we managed to score. We were in control of the game, but we didn't control it to the very end. Saint-Brieuc deserve all the credit for believing in themselves right to the end. We came unstuck in the space of a few minutes at the end.

Do you not regret over-committing numbers forward when they scored the second goal?
We wanted to score a second goal. That should’ve been the last passage of play of the game. The referee out his whistle in his mouth before the final counterattack. We thought it was the final action of the game and we wanted to win it before the penalty shootout. In the end, that’s not when it ended.

How do you pick yourselves up after such a disappointment? The visit of Lens is just around the corner...
I don’t know. We need to pick ourselves up, because you always have to. We are playing a very strong opponent in three days.

It’s the first time that you sound defeated this season. Can you understand what has just happened?
I wasn’t expecting the game to end like that. We opened the scoring and they didn’t even have any chances. We were at fault, again, from a set-piece. We have to recognise that. When they equalised, they were outnumbering us in the box and were unmarked. Now we have to bounce back. That's the whole question: how strong and capable are we of bouncing back? Right now, I don't know…

How do you explain the inability to see out the final minutes of the match?
We kept the ball for large periods of the second half. We should’ve done better at the end of the game. We gave them chances at the end that we'd denied them all game. Up until the 88th minute, we were very disciplined, working hard. It's all the more difficult to understand because we knew we had the result in our grasp. We knew it was going to be a tough game and it was. We played what we thought was the right game, at least for 88 minutes. Unfortunately, it lasted eight or nine minutes more.

Were you surprised by how good Stade Briochin were?
No. We saw their quality in their recent matches. They maintained their belief right to the very end. That was their biggest strength. Even on that last counterattack, they committed numbers forward. They deserved it. You have to give them credit for that.
