His half-time entrance changed everything: Le Gym’s performance, the structure of the team (which had lined up in a 3-4-3 formation at kick-off) and the course of the match. Showing sharpness, inspiration and determination, Sofiane Diop stepped into a number-eight role in the second half against Lille, alongside Tanguy Ndombele in a 4-3-3 designed – as Franck Haise put it – to “match” the visitors in the heart of the battlefield.

The Nice manager’s gamble paid off, too, as his tactical adjustment brought balance not only to the game but also to the score itself in the 56th minute, when Les Aiglons’ no. 10 both initiated a sumptuous attacking move and then finished it off himself with a delightful, side-footed finish.

Bonus stat: On Sunday, Sofiane Diop scored his second goal in eight 2024–2025 Ligue 1 games for Nice, which is more than he managed in his first two top-flight seasons with the club (one goal in 32 appearances). Diop also registered his third goal involvement as a substitute in the league this season (following his goals against both Saint-Étienne and Lille as well as his assist against Nantes), with no other Ligue 1 player doing better than him in this respect.
