Nice 8-0 Saint-Etienne

Stats from a night like no other

Here's a look back at the stats from Nice's 8-0 win over AS Saint-Etienne in the opening match of Ligue 1 Matchday 5 on Friday.

  • On Friday, Nice won a Ligue 1 match by a margin of at least eight goals for the third time in club history, following on from two other 8-0 wins - over Rennes on 27 March 1949 and Sedan on 15 September 1957. Les Aiglons thus equalled their all-time record for most goals scored in a single match in the top flight.

  • Nice are only the second team other than Paris Saint-Germain (who have managed it three times) to win a Ligue 1 match by at least eight goals in the 21st century, following Lille v Istres on 2 April 2005 (also 8-0).

  • Youssoufa Moukoko (Nice) is only the second player born in 2004 or later to be involved in at least three goals in a match in Europe's top five leagues (two goals, one assist on Friday), after Evan Ferguson with Brighton against Newcastle in the Premier League (three goals on 2 September 2023).

  • Nice are the first team to score at least six goals in the first half of a Ligue 1 match in the 21st century, and the first to do so since Lyon against Marseille on 24 May 1997 (7-0 at half-time, 8-0 final score).

  • Nice benefitted from their earliest own-goal in Ligue 1 since December 1951 (also fourth minute v Nancy).

  • Tanguy Ndombele scored his first league goal since striking for Napoli in Serie A on 19 March 2023. It is only his second Ligue 1 goal, following a strike for Lyon at Nîmes on 24 May 2019.

  • Evann Guessand has scored three goals in his last three Ligue 1 games - that’s as many as in his previous 17 appearances in the top flight. It is only the second time in his career that the Nice striker has both scored and assisted in the same Ligue 1 match (one goal, one assist also with Nantes v Toulouse on 28 August 2022).

  • Sofiane Diop (Nice) has scored three goals in five Ligue 1 matches against Saint-Etienne -  that's more than against any other team in the top flight. The Moroccan international’s strike was his 16th in the top flight and his first since the clash with Marseille on 5 February 2023.
