Europa League

Rangers, Real Sociedad, Lazio... Le Gym's draw

OGC Nice now know the identity of their eight opponents in the Europa League league phase, following the draw that took place this Friday lunchtime in Monaco.

At home, Les Aiglons will host Glasgow Rangers (Scotland), Real Sociedad (Spain), Bodo/Glimt (Norway) and Twente (Netherlands).

They will travel to Rome's Stadio Olimpico to face Lazio (Italy), as well as to the grounds of Ferencvaros (Hungary), Union Saint-Gilloise (Belgium) and Elfsborg (Sweden).

WHEN WILL THE MATCHES TAKE PLACE?

The schedule will be announced this Saturday, once all the parameters have been taken into account (for example, avoiding that two teams sharing the same stadium, like the two Milan clubs, play at home on the same day) following the draws of the three competitions.

Europa League matches remain scheduled for Thursdays, except for Matchday 1, which will take place between Wednesday and Thursday. All the matches on the final Matchday will be played at the same time on 30 January for reasons of fairness.

  •             M1: 25-26 September 2024
  •             M2: 3 October 2024
  •             M3: 24 October 2024
  •             M4: 7 November 2024
  •             M5: 28 November 2024
  •             M6: 12 December 2024
  •             M7: 23 January 2025
  •             M8: 30 January 2025

WHY DO WE NO LONGER TALK ABOUT GROUPS?

Because the format has changed and there are no longer groups, but rather a large league bringing together 36 teams. They therefore do not face the same opponents. Qualification for the next stage of the competition depends on a team's ranking within this league.

  •             The top eight qualify directly for the Round of 16
  •             The teams in 9th to 16th will be seeded in the play-offs (equivalent to the Round of 32) and will face those ranked from 17th to 24th. Clubs that lose in the play-offs will not be transferred to the Conference League; their European journey will end at this stage.
  •             The rest of the teams (25th to 36th) will be eliminated and play no further European football this season.

HOW MANY POINTS DO YOU NEED TO QUALIFY?

Studies conducted by mathematicians have estimated, as reported by L'Equipe, that 9 points (over 8 Matchdays) will likely be needed to rank higher than 24th place and thus reach the play-offs. Teams finishing between 25th and 36th place will be automatically eliminated, with no transfer to the Conference League. Meanwhile, 15 to 17 points would be necessary to secure a spot in the top 8, which grants direct qualification to the Round of 16.

The teams positioned between 9th and 16th place will be seeded in the play-offs and will face those ranked between 17th and 24th.
