Galtier: 'Anything can happen in a match'
Find out more about Christophe Galtier's press conference after the Aiglons' 3-2 win over Lyon on Sunday.
Christophe, do your succesful substitutions also mean that you made mistakes with your starting line-up?
If there is a mistake, and there is obviously one that I must accept, it is my game plan. My 11 was linked to my game plan, to what I had observed of Lyon and thought would happen in the match. In the end, we couldn't get the ball out as we wanted to. We couldn't press Lyon. That put us in real difficulty. In the first half, Lyon had chances. We had two or three shots that were dangerous. It wasn’t enough because Lyon were playing really well. What I had put in place was not working. At the break, I wanted to change the way we played. To do that, I had to make some important changes. I waited, I wanted to do it before it went 2-0. In the end, it was 2-0 and at that moment, these changes were to bring a completely different style of play, with players who were more central and brought more and more direct on the flanks. I knew that the third goal was going to be a turning point in the match, if there was a third goal. In the end, with the substitutes, especially Youcef, it worked. But it's not my success, it's what they did. Youcef brought lots of energy in the last 15 minutes. This third goal gave us a lot of hope, both to the team and to the supporters. It put Lyon under pressure. Lyon found themselves outnumbered and we took advantage of that. The players that came on were almost perfect in a match that many people thought was over. The fact that we scored and the extra man meant that my players got the better of Olympique Lyonnais.
At 0-2, 80', did you believe that this scenario would happen?
We didn't think too much about winning. We were thinking about scoring a goal, reducing the gap and telling ourselves that in the last five or ten minutes we could at least get an equaliser. At half-time, we weren't worried, but I was looking for ways to put this very good team under pressure, with a lot of technical quality, which also has a lot of athletic ability. I told my players: "This is a team that is playing a lot at the moment. The second half could be difficult for them. To tell you that in the last 15 minutes with extra time, we were going to score three goals, no. But to have more space, more space for the players, to have a better chance to score, that's not the case. But to have more space, more situations, to find them more on a low block to push them to make mistakes, yes. In the end, that's what happened. There was the foul on the red card, the foul on the penalty. And then it all went crazy.
How did you explain to Lotomba and Atal the choice to play Daniliuc on the right?
We worked with two options in that position all week. Flavius and another one. The players were able to understand the way I wanted us to play against Lyon and the way they pressed. I had put something in place. Lyon adapted very quickly. They have a way of countering the first ball out with a very precise organisation. This time, they changed it from the moment they saw Flavius on the team sheet. Peter (Bosz) is a great tactician, a technician, he had to read my intentions quickly and then we struggled. But I never explain my choices before the match. I can give some afterwards if the player asks. I can also explain my choices. That's what I had planned with Youcef tomorrow morning. And I repeat, I will see him. I expect Youcef to be using his strong points. Because when he is like that, he is very difficult to stop and he is a real added value to our team. There was also Calvin Stengs’ absence, who got injured in training. I had an issue out wide with Justin Kluivert and Calvin Stengs missing. When we were 0-2 down, that's why I brought both Youcef and Lucas (Da Cunha) on, to bring us both impact inside and directness. There is no criticism of Flavius or Hicham, they played as I asked them to play. It turned out not to be a good choice. You have to appreciate the fact that we were able to win these three very important points.
Was it Stengs' injury that led you to start Gouiri, Dolberg and Delort together for the first time?
This association will work, can work and must work, because they are quality players. But not in this style of play. What I learned from the match - and it's much more pleasant to do it with the 3 points - is that they can be played together, but not in this system. Obviously, with Calvin's absence, looking at the schedule with a very busy week (a trip to Troyes against Marseille where there will be a lot of intensity and the trip to Angers), I wondered how I could do it. But I found it difficult not to include them in the starting line-up when were playing against Lyon. I think that these three players must be associated with a fourth player to be at their best, more complementary and probably set up differently on the pitch.
You were in discussion with Lyon this summer. Is it more enjoyable for you this Sunday?
Not at all. I have a lot of respect for Mr. Aulas, who has certainly been one of the greatest presidents of Ligue 1 for years. Lyon is a great club, that is very successful in terms of structure and their infrastructures. My extreme joy was linked to the fact that I was freed from a big personal frustration. Because I didn't like seeing my team play like that and I'm the first at fault for that.
It was a Niçois Sunday, with Quartararo's victory in the moto GP?
We were waiting for a French world champion in GP. It is good for French motor sport, for sport in general. And more precisely, this young man from Nice, a passionate OGC Nice supporter. We are very touched by this. We were quickly told that we had a world champion from Nice. We are proud of him. We dedicate this victory to him, but it's not much compared to the feat he has just achieved. He is the first French world champion, he must be appreciated for his true value. I had seen his qualifying sessions yesterday where he was in great difficulty. He started in 15th position. He is now the World Champion. It's an incredible performance. I am very happy for him and very proud that a young rider from Nice is wearing the colours of this city. It's a very good Sunday in Nice.
