Biography
At the age of 23, Walter Benitez became the Gym's first recruit of the 2016/17 campaign. After joining Quilmes in the Buenos Aires suburbs, he turned pro in April 2014 and helped his club stave off relegation before establishing himself as first-choice the following season.
A physically imposing 91kg and 1.91m, Walter made his move to Europe and was back-up goalkeeper until October of the 2017/18 season when he became the club's number one.
In 2018/19, his performances caught the eye of fans and media as he was named Crédit Agricole Aiglon of the season and 'Goalkeeper of the Year' by France Football magazine after keeping 16 clean sheets in 35 top-flight appearances.
Benitez is now undoubtedly one of the squad's leading figures with more than 150 competitive appearances to his name, and he has worn the captain's armband on a number of occasions.
During the 2021-22 season, Benitez continued his progression within the Red and Black squad. A senior member of the team and captain on several occasions, he was one of the main elements of the best defence in Ligue 1 (36 goals conceded) and kept 14 clean sheets in his 37 appearances. After acquiring French nationality during the season, he was named among the top 5 goalkeepers of the campaign at the Trophées UNFP. At the end of the season, Walter Benitez had played 188 matches for Le Gym.
